Understanding the Three Scripts

Hindi and Urdu share much of their everyday vocabulary and grammar, but they are written in different scripts. Hindi uses Devanagari, written left to right. Urdu uses the Nastaliq style of the Perso-Arabic script, written right to left, and it is the script in which much classical shayari was first composed. Hinglish is simply Hindi or Urdu written in English (Roman) letters, the way most people type on their phones. Offering all three means the same shayari can be enjoyed by a reader in Lucknow, Lahore or London.

Tips for Sharing Shayari

Keep a status to a single couplet so it is easy to read on a small screen. Choose Hinglish for chats with friends, Hindi for family groups, and Urdu when you want an elegant look for an image post. If you send a shayari to someone special, add a line of your own before it – a personal touch makes a borrowed couplet feel like your own message. And if you use a line by a famous poet, it is always good practice to mention their name.
